What to Expect: Our Assessment Process
Regardless of which type of assessment is the best fit for your situation, our process is designed to be thoughtful, transparent, and supportive from the start.
Step 1: Complete an Assessment Request Form
You will begin by completing an assessment request form, or simply contacting our office.
Step 2: Pre-Intake Call
After you have contacted us, we will arrange a 15-20 minute call with our clinic director. During this call, we will ask you a few questions to get to know your needs, tell you about our assessment process, fees, and timing, and answer any questions you may have.
Step 3: Intake Forms & Assessment Booking
We will send you some intake forms to complete, match you with one of our clinicians, and reach out to book dates for all necessary appointments, including interviews and in-person sessions.
Step 4: Parent/Caregiver or Individual Interview
The first appointment is an in-depth interview. For children and teens, this is usually a parent or caregiver meeting. For older adolescents and post-secondary students, this is usually a meeting with the youth and/or parents. During this meeting, we will review informed consent in detail and ask you questions to better understand the child or teen’s history, strengths, needs, and your hopes and goals for the assessment.
Step 5: Completing Rating Scales & Submitting Documentation
We will provide questionnaires/rating scales for individuals, parents, and teachers to complete. In addition, we will ask you to provide any documentation you have collected, such as report cards, school documents, medical reports, and other important reports.
Step 6: Child/Youth Assessment Sessions
During these appointments, we will talk with, observe, and get to know the child or youth. We will also complete formal testing activities and an interview to better understand strengths, needs, and experiences. The number of sessions and specific activities will vary depending on the type of assessment and the questions being explored. Throughout the process, we prioritize the child or youth’s engagement and well-being by offering breaks, snacks, opportunities for movement, and adjusting pacing as needed. Our clinicians take a flexible, supportive approach and are experienced in working with children and youth with a wide range of learning, attentional, emotional, and developmental needs.
Step 6: Feedback Session(s) and Report
After all of the above steps are completed, we will meet to review the assessment results, including any diagnoses, and recommendations. Feedback sessions are flexible and may include parents/caregivers, the child or youth, or both, depending on the unique situation. Finally, we will provide a detailed written report, which you may choose to share with school professionals, primary care providers, and/or other professionals involved.
